Away from the maddening crowd!

Tanhau has created memories that will stay with us forever! The property is located in the middle of jungle, where you can trek for the joy of it and fill your lungs with pure oxygen. The sky was always beautiful, blue during the day and star-filled at night. We saw many constellations with naked eye. My parents loved the serene, green location, the roomy cottages and the food (they offer indian, asian, continental et al), the staff is extremely helpful.”

A really unique and comfortable place to stay in the wilds of Northern India

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Tanhau. The location is stunning and we loved the focus on sustainability and the natural environment. Tanhau suits people who like getting out of the city - it’s a trek to get there, but the cottage accommodation is charming and comfortable and you really feel that you’re staying somewhere special. Staff and hosts are super accommodating - we loved eating in the communal al fresco space, walking in the local hills and just chilling at our cottage - reading, playing cards, net-surfing, all while watching the sunset over the mountains. An absolute highlight is the grand vista of the Himalayas on an early morning walk and seeing evidence of local wildlife (tigers and leopards and elephants) along the way. Accessibility to Corbett for safari is well managed as a full day trip, which our hosts and staff coordinated for us with ease. Would we go back? Absolutely.”

The best place for a nature lover.

This was the third time we have visited Tanhau and we have loved each and every second. The property is great, Sunando our host Is the best host anyone can ask for, the staff is super friendly and knowledgable…. And the area in itself, just wow. True to its tagline, it is literally like your own private wilderness. Morning and evening walks, the sounds of the jungle, the endless stories, the yummy food, we truly can’t rate it enough. Looking forward to our next trip there again!”

A lovely place with spectacular views

I enjoyed our trip to Tanhau so much that at first I thought I really should keep the place a secret! But... We had heard of Tanhau from another friend and with the heat of Delhi this seemed like a perfect escape. Close enough for a an extended weekend break. The road to Tanhau - the last 4 km is unpaved and only a 4-wheel drive can come up its bumps and turns. We were picked up from the village below in a jeep and had an exciting drive up with fantastic views of Corbett and the valley below. We had chosen to stay in the cottage Bagh which is the highest point of the property. It overlooked a range of hills and the forests of Corbett National Park and the river Kosi. Absolutely lovely. The hills shades of green and blue. A verandah in front of the cottage was draped with hanging flowers that would gently sway in the breeze. The room is large and can sleep 3. The bathroom to my delight is large too, with small plants, and during our visit a largish (friendly) spider that did not seem to go beyond the vicinity of the plants in one corner kept me company. We wanted to take the first day slowly absorbing our surroundings and it was only in the evening that we went for a gentle walk along the path we had driven up on accompanied by a staff member. We were to stay 3 full days, but after the lovely first day, at night a massive storm started. The winds howled. I think I would have been a little afraid but for the fact the cottage felt quite solid. It actually rained pretty much for the next 2 days before we were to leave. To get to the dining area we had to come down a slope and some steps. Not really steep but a bit slippery in the relentless rain. We were provided umbrellas and the staff offered to bring up our food if we did not wish to brave the weather (we did take them up on this for one meal). They were extremely attentive to our various needs coming up and down no matter how much it might have been raining at that point. I really appreciated this. On the evening before we left it stopped raining. We went for another walk, rambling along, seeing villagers come to collect water, streams overflowing and despite such a wet 2 days wild flowers could be spotted between the ferns on the hillside. A beautiful sky unfolded before us. Then Sunando who owns the place, called to tell me to go to the side of the cottage and there overlooking another valley we saw a spectacular double rainbow, which seemed to touch the earth. It was breathtaking! Later at dusk Sunando took us in the jeep when he went to set up his camera traps. On the first night we had been there, he told us a leopard had visited. It must have been in the bushes as it appeared on the camera only minutes after Sunando left the spot. Then on that final night, as he had predicted a tiger came by. The rain would have washed away its markings and territory had to be marked again. The footage that he shared made it all so much more exciting. Tanhau is remote. There is no TV, it can rain and you may feel cut off. The internet at times comes and goes. Animals show up every few days (not on the property usually). if you are lucky you may hear them. The views are spectacular, the food is good. There are resident dogs and hens. You can go on gentle walks or hikes (that might be challenging for some); read a book or play a board game. If the internet doesn't give trouble watch a film or listen to music. But as the name implies - you must like tanhai or at least some solitude. It's good to go with friends but it is also a place where you can go alone. You will be very well looked after. We can't wait to go back!

A very special place

Tanhau is a very special place. My son and I enjoyed every moment of our stay. Thank you Sunando for sharing your vision with us, Umaid for your kindness and all of the staff for their friendly attentiveness. Some of the walks (hikes) are not for the fainthearted, but what a sense of achievement when you have done them. The views are stunning and where else in India can you drink the sweetest purest tap water that you have ever tasted.”

Great offbeat option near Corbett

We travelled to Tanhau in Dec 2021, with a family of 4 adults including 2 senior citizens and one 9 yo child. We were looking for a relaxed, quite holiday and we were very happy with our choice. We stayed in the Chukar cottage, which has 2 rooms and a beautiful sit out. This is a great place for relaxing, and taking long walks in the nearby forests and villages. The property is personally managed by Sunando along with a very able staff of 3. There are 5 very friendly dogs on the property, and we had a great time playing with them. They will accompany you on the walks and even come to your room to play. From youngest to oldest, every one enjoyed this property, with the major drivers of enjoyment being as below (cannot let go of corporate speak can we 😊) 1. Personal attention by the host – Sunando is a great host, with encyclopedic knowledge of Corbett’s wildlife and environs. He is a very engaging conversationalist and joined us for many meals, regaling us with his anecdotes ! 2. The sheer isolation – no other touristy places nearby, so you really enjoy the solitude 3. Great food – the cook was very good, and we had great Kumaoni as well as continental and Asian food. He had made some Khao Swe, which was some of the best Burmese, I have had ever 4. Walks and trails nearby There are no major drawbacks to this place, except if you are expecting a regular touristy experience, this is not for you. And we are thankful for that 😊.”

Hidden Gem: Tanhau is absolutely amazing!

This homestay is beyond Corbett on the mountain top with fabulous views of the Corbett reserve and the Kosi River on one side. And you can spot the snow covered Himalayas on the other side on a clear day a short walk away. It was a 6.5-7 hour drive (not including any stops) from Gurgaon to Tanhau for us. We stayed for 3 nights and left wishing we had planned for more! It's simple, very comfortable, located well inside from the main road and surrounded only by mountains and wilderness. Beautifully made overall and a lot of focus on sustainability (e.g. solar panels). Absolutely quiet at night and you can hear calls from the forest! We stayed at Bagh and I recommend a minimum stay of 3 nights for sure, ideally 4 to 5 :) What to do: walks and hikes around during the day and early evening; Tapu, choti and godi (I hope I got the names right!) Some of the best views I've experienced in a while and the 5 dogs give you company throughout. Read a book, enjoy the dogs company, play board/card games and enjoy the sunset from the front courtyard of Bagh. Food: All meals are home cooked since there is nothing around. Excellent food; not oily or overly spicy and yummm! Indian and continental options by Bhagat, the cook. Thank you Sunando for your hospitality :) and thanks to the rest of the team; Subhash, Bhagat and the doggos; Neo, Wolfie, Bolt, Karma and Dollar. We'll hopefully be back soon!”

“Unique. Sunando’s place is the most incredible AirBnb we’ve stayed at. It’s a retreat really with days filled with exploring, relaxing, watching sunsets, watching monkeys, spotting leopards, eating incredible food cooked by his team. Umaid his guide took us on walks through the forest, knowledgable and funny - he knows the area so intimately. Sunando has so much to say about an area he truly loves. He was also helpful setting up activities and fascinating to chat to over some dinner. We couldn’t recommend it more.”
