Walking Safaris & Hikes at Tanhau

Step into the reserve forests of the Corbett landscape on foot, and experience the jungle the way it was meant to be experienced - quietly, attentively, and without the rush of a crowded gypsy safari. Our guided walking safaris and hikes are designed for guests who want a deeper connection with nature, whether that means serious wilderness exploration or a shorter, gentler forest walk.

Guided walking safaris are what we do best. We’re in these forests regularly, exploring trails, tracking signs, and learning the rhythms of the landscape across seasons. Based on your fitness level, appetite for adventure, and preferred difficulty, we recommend a trail that fits you. On foot, the forest feels completely different - every call, scent, and movement matters, and the possibility of a special sighting always feels close.

Along with walking safaris, we also offer a range of hikes: from quick 2-hour trails to longer routes with climbs and sweeping views. Some follow historic jungle paths once used by Jim Corbett in the region, while others lead to quiet breakfast points and panoramic lookouts. Birding is excellent on most routes, and every walk offers the chance to learn how to read the forest — pugmarks, alarm calls, scrape marks, and the subtle signs that tell you what’s moved through recently.

As always with wildlife, nothing is guaranteed — but the experience of exploring these pristine forests on foot, with big cat presence in the wider landscape, is unforgettable.

Forest Explorer Walking Safari

A beautiful introduction to guided walking safaris near Tanhau, this route takes you through hilly sal forest below the neighbourhood school. It’s a calmer, easier alternative to the Maneater trail, while still offering the real feel of walking in jungle terrain. Depending on how far you go, the return includes some climbing back up towards Tanhau.

  • Duration: ~3 hours

  • Group size: 1–4 guests

  • Difficulty: Easy–Moderate

  • Minimum requirements: reasonable fitness and agility; comfortable being in the forest

Jungle Fever Hike

A compact hike into the surrounding forest leading towards the ‘tapu’. It’s a great option if you want a short but immersive walk with forest views, regular signs of wildlife, and a bit of effort on the return climb. A good “quick jungle fix” for guests who want to feel the forest without committing to a long safari.

  • Duration: ~2 hours

  • Difficulty: Easy–Moderate

Good Morning Godi Hike

A short early morning hike to a viewpoint around 700 feet above Tanhau, with panoramic views across the surrounding hills and forests. Godi is also one of the best spots to look for Himalayan Gorals (rarely seen inside Corbett National Park), and with luck and effort, even the Cheer Pheasant.

The round trip is about 4 km, mostly gentle with a short climb near the end. Best done early morning.

  • Duration: ~2 hours

  • Difficulty: Easy

  • We recommend neutral clothing, full length trousers and full sleeve shirts, good hiking shoes

  • Forest conditions and routes can vary by season; we choose trails based on safety, weather, and wildlife movement.

The Maneater of Mohan Walking Safari

Our signature guided walking safari in the Corbett landscape - a roughly 9 km trail through stunning reserve forests, following the same jungle tracks once associated with the famous Mohan man-eater territory documented by Jim Corbett.

One or more of our naturalists accompany you throughout. The route includes animal paths and uneven sections, with much of the first half being downhill. It’s ideal for guests who are reasonably fit and comfortable walking in true wilderness.

We start early, and the trail offers excellent birding and strong wildlife potential. Even on quieter days, walking through these forests - listening for alarm calls, watching the nullahs, and sensing the jungle around you - is the kind of experience that stays with you.

A light breakfast is carried along and enjoyed at a scenic spot overlooking a nullah.

  • Duration: 5–6 hours (half-day version)

  • Group size: 1–4 guests

  • Difficulty: Moderate

  • Minimum requirements: reasonable fitness and agility; comfortable being in the forest

Optional full-day version: For those who want more, the safari can be extended into a full-day loop back to Tanhau, including a forest lunch break and a steady uphill return before sunset.
