About Tanhau
A forest home in the mountains above Corbett
Tanhau is my home.
I’m Sunando — a banker, entrepreneur and startup enthusiast - but long before any of that, I have always been deeply drawn to animals, forests and specifically the wild landscapes of Jim Corbett National Park and the Himalayas. For years, it was my dream to move away from city life and make the forests and mountains my home.
Tanhau was born from that desire — to step away from the concrete jungles our cities have become, and to live a simple, sustainable life in harmony with nature. More than a place to stay, Tanhau is a way of life.
The Place
Located on a hilltop at an altitude of approximately 4,300 feet, far away from the crowded resort belts of Corbett, Tanhau overlooks reserve forests and the winding Kosi River below. The views are expansive, quiet and deeply immersive, perhaps the most special in the Corbett landscape.
When I acquired the land, it was completely barren. Since then, we have been in a constant process of reforesting the property and its surroundings, planting over 2,500 trees so far. This has resulted in a significant increase in animal & bird activity within & around the property.
Although the land spans nearly five acres, construction has been deliberately minimal with the focus on rewilding instead. As a result, we have only two guest cottages - ensuring peace, privacy and exclusivity even during peak travel periods.
Is Tanhau for Everyone?
No.
If you’re looking for manicured lawns, swimming pools, spas and loud music in the evenings, Tanhau will likely disappoint you. Because we sit within very active wildlife habitat, we follow certain house rules to minimise disturbance & our carbon footprint - and those may not suit everyone.
But if you’re seeking quiet, immersion and a chance to experience nature and wildlife in a way few places allow, Tanhau may feel like home.
We are fortunate to witness a rich diversity of bird and animal life here, including species rarely recorded elsewhere in the Corbett region, and we enjoy sharing these experiences with guests who truly appreciate them.
Time in the Forest
Your time at Tanhau can take many forms.
You might join us on a guided walking safari through prime tiger habitat, listen to sambar deer alarm calls at sundown, dine outdoors under a sky full of stars - or simply sit with a book, wholesome food and an uninterrupted view.
Some experiences here are thrilling, while many are more subtle. Most are unique & unforgettable.
Living Lightly
Sustainability at Tanhau is not a feature, it is integrated into our foundation.
We run almost entirely on solar energy for both electricity and water heating, meet a significant portion of our water needs through rainwater harvesting, compost our organic waste, and employ only local staff.
Our team is family to us. So are our six dogs, who truly rule the property. We also share the land with more than 45 hens, seven ducks and a guinea fowl - this is a lived-in forest home, not a resort.
